Admission Requirements for Turkish Universities

University And Program Diversity

Studying abroad has become the dream of many students, and Turkey is considered one of the most famous and preferred study destinations for international students today. Its unique geographical location between the East and the West, with a part of it in Asia and a part in Europe, has made it a multicultural and diverse country where students can easily mix and adapt. This is in addition to the quality of the educational system and modern facilities offered by Turkish universities and the numerous options for studying in Turkey, including Turkish scholarships and public and private Turkish universities, with very reasonable conditions and costs. This article will focus on the most important admission requirements for Turkish universities.

How can you start your educational journey in Turkey?

You can start your university studies in Turkey in one of three ways:

Turkish Scholarship

The Turkish government fully funds the Turkish scholarship and covers almost all fields of study. Turkish scholarships offer many benefits to students, including:

  • Round-trip airfare to and from Turkey
  • Free accommodation
  • Health insurance
  • Monthly stipend
  • One year of Turkish language study

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must meet the required GPA in their high school (bachelor’s) degree, prepare and submit their documents, and apply for the scholarship as soon as possible. The scholarship application typically opens on January 10th, with intense student competition.

Private Turkish Universities

There are more than 60 private universities in Turkey, many of which have received international rankings. They are known for their modern technological facilities and use of the latest educational technologies. Turkish private universities also offer the opportunity to study various majors in English in addition to Turkish.

Private Turkish universities do not require any complex tests or conditions for admission. Students only need to provide their high school diploma and language proficiency certificate, depending on the language of the desired major. If a language proficiency certificate is unavailable, the student may need to take a language test. If a student cannot achieve the required score on the test, they may have to attend a preparatory language year offered by Turkish universities.

To study specific administrative, technical, or engineering majors, students must submit their high school (bachelor’s) diploma with an over 50% – 60% GPA.

On the other hand, students interested in medical majors must have a GPA of no less than 70%.

Public Universities

Turkish government universities are prestigious, and some are among the world’s top universities. Tuition fees at Turkish government universities are low, but they impose various conditions on international students seeking to enroll.

Each university sets specific requirements and assesses students based on their academic performance. Government universities also require international students who wish to pursue a bachelor’s or postgraduate degree to pass the Turkish university entrance exam (YÖS), and each university has its version of the exam. Therefore, students must register separately for each university.

These are the general conditions and pathways to enroll in Turkish universities. Depending on the specific university and program you’re interested in, there may be additional requirements or variations in the application process.

Once you arrive in Turkey and complete your university registration, you must apply for a residence permit within ten days. A student visa allows you to stay in Turkey for only 90 days, so it’s crucial to promptly apply for a residence permit.
