The Milli Kütüphane (National Library of Türkiye), located in Ankara, was established on April 15, 1946 under the Ministry of Education. It houses one of the most comprehensive collections in the country, containing over 3 million items, including books, periodicals, rare manuscripts, and multimedia resources. The library plays a vital role in preserving and promoting the intellectual heritage of Türkiye.

University Libraries

All Turkish universities maintain modern library systems on their campuses, serving as a central resource for academic research, teaching, and learning.

  • Libraries contain extensive collections of books, periodicals, theses, music scores, audio-visual materials, and research databases.

  • Many also offer multimedia labs, quiet study areas, and group collaboration spaces.

  • All universities provide computer labs and free wireless internet access for student use.

While most university libraries offer resources in Turkish, prominent institutions such as Middle East Technical University (METU), Bilkent, Hacettepe, Boğaziçi, Istanbul Technical University (ITU), and Sabancı University have large collections in English as well.

Digital & Virtual Libraries

Modern university libraries in Türkiye are increasingly digitalized, offering:

  • E-books, e-journals, and electronic databases

  • 24/7 remote access to virtual libraries

  • Electronic reserves accessible on-campus and off-campus

Students have access to hundreds of thousands of academic resources, even when the physical library is closed.
