Exam Stages
First Stage: Level Assessment
To enroll in a Turkish university, students must provide a recognized language proficiency certificate based on their chosen medium of study. For those intending to study in English, a TOEFL certificate is necessary. If a student wishes to study in Turkish, they must present an accredited certificate from a recognized language institute in Turkiye, such as the TOMER Institute.
If a student does not have any of these accredited certificates, the university will schedule a language assessment test. This test is designed to evaluate the student’s language skills and readiness to engage in academic studies. Each university sets a minimum score required for admission. If a student passes this initial assessment, they can register directly for their desired academic program. Conversely, if they do not achieve the required score, they will need to take a preparatory language course at the university before proceeding to their major studies.
Second Stage: English Language Proficiency Test
Students who achieve satisfactory scores in the placement test are required to take an English language proficiency test, which is divided into two main components:
Writing Test: This part includes various questions designed to measure the student’s reading, writing, and listening skills. The written test often consists of multiple-choice questions, comprehension exercises, and tasks that require written responses, assessing how well students understand written material and their ability to communicate effectively in writing.
Speaking Test: After completing the writing part, students typically have a 30-minute break before the speaking test begins.
