Renewing Your Student Residence Permit Annually in Türkiye
When to Apply for Renewal
Timing is critical when renewing your student residence permit:
- You should submit your renewal application within 60 days prior to the expiration date of your current permit.
- Applications must be submitted before your current permit expires to avoid penalties.
- If your permit has already expired, you have only 10 days after the expiry date to apply, and you must submit a petition explaining your late application.
- Failing to apply within 10 days after expiration may result in penalties and require you to leave Türkiye.
Required Documents
To successfully renew your student residence permit, you need to prepare the following documents:
- A completed online renewal application form.
- Valid passport (must be valid for at least 60 days beyond the expiry date of the residence permit you’re applying for).
- Biometric passport photos.
- Proof of health insurance valid for the duration of the renewed permit.
- Proof of financial resources or income to support yourself in Türkiye.
- Proof of accommodation (rental contract or title deed).
- Student registration certificate from your university.
- Receipt of residence permit fee payment (810 TL in 2025).
Application Process
The renewal process involves several steps:
- Visit the official Residence Permit Application platform online and select “extension of the duration of residence permit” or “I am applying for extension.”
- Complete the online application form with your personal information and details about your studies.
- Select an appointment date (choose the earliest available date).
- Print and sign your completed application form.
- Pay the residence permit fee either online or at a designated Tax Office and keep the receipt.
- Gather all required documents as listed above.
- Attend your appointment with all documents.
Important Considerations
- Your renewed residence permit cannot be valid beyond your passport’s expiration date.
- If you plan to study in Türkiye for multiple years, consider ensuring your passport validity covers your entire study period to simplify the process.
- For students whose residence permit has expired and who failed to apply within the 10-day grace period, you must leave Türkiye (paying any applicable penalties) and then return to apply for a new initial residence permit.
- If submitting a late renewal application (within 10 days after expiration), your letter of excuse must be addressed to “İstanbul Valiliği İl Göç İdaresi Müdürlüğü” or the equivalent migration authority in your city, include your name, residence permit application number, passport number, and must be written in Turkish.
