About the language test in Turkish universities
The English language assessment typically consists of four key sections, reading, writing, speaking, and listening, each designed to evaluate a student's skills and confirm they can succeed in their chosen field and comprehend course materials and lectures.
In the reading section, students encounter various texts such as academic articles, essays, and comprehension questions that test their ability to analyze and interpret written information. Exam stages
First Stage: Level Assessment
To enroll, students must provide a recognized language proficiency certificate based on their chosen medium of study, a TOEFL certificate for English-taught programs, or an accredited certificate from a recognized Turkish-language institute such as TOMER for Turkish-taught programs.
If a student does not hold any of these accredited certificates, the university schedules a language assessment (placement) test to evaluate their skills and readiness for academic study. Second Stage: English Language Proficiency Test
Students who achieve satisfactory scores in the placement test then take an English language proficiency test, divided into two main components:
- Writing Test: Includes a range of questions measuring reading, writing, and listening skills, often multiple-choice questions, comprehension exercises, and written-response tasks that assess how well students understand written material and communicate in writing.
- Speaking Test: After the writing part, students typically have a 30-minute break before the speaking test. This segment evaluates speaking ability, including constructing grammatically correct sentences and listening comprehension. Students may converse with an examiner, respond to prompts, or describe topics to demonstrate fluency.
