University Preparatory Year

Language proficiency is a key requirement for university admission in Türkiye. Depending on the medium of instruction—Turkish, English, French, or German—students may be required to complete a language preparatory year before beginning their degree program.

Turkish as a Language of Instruction

At many universities in Türkiye, especially state universities, Turkish is the primary language of instruction. Admission to these programs requires proof of Turkish language proficiency. For students who are not yet proficient, universities typically offer Turkish Language Courses for Foreigners, often through TÖMER or on-campus language centers.

English, French, and German Programs

Many foundation (private) universities and some state universities offer programs taught in English, French, or German. If a student does not meet the required language proficiency level, they are placed in a language preparatory program.

English Preparatory Schools

At the start of the academic year, incoming students admitted to English-medium programs are required to take a language proficiency or placement exam. Students who do not pass are placed in a one-year intensive English preparatory program designed to help them meet the university’s academic language standards.

These preparatory programs include:

  • Intensive language instruction (reading, writing, listening, speaking)

  • Academic vocabulary and essay writing

  • Research and presentation skills

  • Regular assessments and end-of-year proficiency exams

Program Structure & Success

Preparatory school curricula are designed to enable students to reach the required proficiency level by the end of the academic year. Success in the program depends on:

  • Regular attendance

  • Active class participation

  • Timely homework submissions

  • Use of academic resources and support services

Students who complete the preparatory year successfully are eligible to begin their degree studies in the following academic term.
